An Ounce of Prevention: Literacy
One of the easiest ways to raise adult literacy rates is to ensure that children learn to read. Instill a love of reading at an early age by trying some of these simple things:

Be a good example- become a regular at your local library. Read for pleasure and for knowledge.

Establish family story night- turn off the tv for a night and discuss what you are reading with your family. Play storytelling games. Retell the family history or keep a family journal of interesting daily events.

Volunteer- donate an hour a week at a local school, library, or church. Start your own storytime circle or tutor a struggling student.
Read to and with your children- make reading part of your family's routine, as a group and individually. Include storytime during sleepovers or longer playdates. Re-live your childhood adventures by reading classic chapter books together.
Make reading fun- Bring the stories to life with silly voices and encourage the children to act out their favorite scenes. Read the book before seeing the movie.

Throughout March The Mommies Network and its local chapters are lovingly recognizing Adult Literacy Month. We encourage you to find ways to increase adult literacy in your community

Member Spotlight: Lorasmommy
What is your REAL first name?

Susan

What is the meaning behind your screen name?

I am Lora's mommy.

How old are you?

I am 31 years old.

Are you married, single, or dating?

I am married.

How did you and your DH/SO meet?

My husband and I met online while playing a first person shooter game.

What is the best part of being a mommy?

I love my daughters giggles, kisses and hugs. I love the fact she still nurses and sleeps at night in my bed.

What was/is your profession?

I used to be a school teacher. Since I am in The USA I have not had a job.

What is your Favorite Food?

I love anything Italian. My home made lasagna is great. My moms cooking is better though. I LOVE her meatballs.

What are some of your interests?

I like to play online games with my husband. We both play World of Warcraft now. I love to crochet and play my flute. I also like to mix music using my computer and DJ software. Recently I have joined the gym to shake of some of the baby fat and I am having a great time doing that.

Where is the one place in the world you would like to visit the most?

I would love to snap my fingers and be home with my mom and family. I haven't seen them in 3 years.

Tell us about your child(ren) and your journey to becoming a mom.

Lora is my one and only child for now. I never thought I would become a mommy. It terrified me. Raising and being responsible for a small being scared me tremendously. It is however the best thing that has ever happened to me. Since my family lives so far away and my husbands family lives about 2 hours away, I am doing everything by myself. It can be hard to not have anyone in reach to ask for advice but so far I have made it.

Are you from North Carolina? If not, where are you from and what brought you here?

I am from The Netherlands, a small country next to Germany and Belgium. My husband is American and in the Army, so for us to be together the logical choice was for me to move. I have been here since November 2007.

What was your first CPM event?

I have been to the park with Kathy and Brandy. After that we enjoyed some live music and had lunch.

If you had an afternoon of time to yourself, what would you do?

I probably crochet, play a game, take a nice long bath and listen to music.

What (or who) is your favorite:

-Author?

W.F. Hermans (Dutch author)

-Book?

Nooit meer slapen (Never sleep again)

-Season?

Fall and spring

-Day of the week?

Friday

-Pizza topping?

Mushrooms and ham

-Number?

7

-TV show of all time?

Lost

If you could be President for one day, and had the power to pass laws w/o the hassle of the pesky Congress and Senate, what would you do with that one day?

I would immediately pass a bill that gives free healthcare for everyone!

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you live and why?

I would live in The Netherlands. I love my country and I miss everything about it.

If you could have any job in the world, what would it be and why?

I would probably be a volunteer worker in a 3rd world country and help people consume better foods, help the sick and educate the children so they can lead better lives.

March is Adult Literacy Month
One in seven American adults cannot read this blog according to the U.S. Department of Education's National Assessment of Adult Literacy. The Mommies Network is teaming up with local organizations across the country this month to promote adult literacy. As leaders in our communities, we are dedicated to improving the world around us, one mom at a time.

Reading impacts our daily lives in ways many take for granted: From understanding a utility bill to helping a child with homework, literacy is an essential skill. Without reading, adults have difficulty finding a job or getting promoted, participating in their child's schooling, and keeping up with important local and world issues. Even grocery shopping can be a daunting task.

Imagine your day without the benefit of reading. Find ways you can volunteer your time, your talent, or your resources by visiting Volunteer Guide and join The Mommies Network in promoting adult literacy.
